# Alternate Format Texts

## What Are Alternate Format Texts?

Alternate format texts are course materials that are provided in a different format to help students access and engage with their learning. These accommodations may be provided in either:

- **Digital format** \(electronic versions of textbooks or course materials\)
- **Print format** \(adapted printed materials\)

Alternate format accommodations are based on the specific impacts of a student's disability and are supported by the documentation on file with Accessible Learning Services \(ALS\).

When appropriate documentation supports this need, your Accessibility Counsellor may approve **"Electronic Books"** or **"Alternate Format Texts"** as an academic accommodation on your accommodation letter. ALS then works with Campus Services partners to help facilitate alternate format requests.

## Who Can Access Alternate Format Texts?

You may be eligible if:

✅ You are registered with Accessible Learning Services \(ALS\)

✅ Your accommodation letter includes **Alt. Format** or another approved alternate format accommodation

If you are unsure whether you have this accommodation, please contact your Accessibility Counsellor.

## Blackboard Ally: Alternative Formats Available Instantly

Many course materials in Blackboard are already available in accessible formats through **Blackboard Ally**.

Ally allows you to choose the format that works best for your learning needs and preferences.

### Available Formats

### 🎧 Audio \(MP3\)

Listen to course content instead of reading it. This option can be helpful while commuting, exercising, or multitasking.

### 📱 ePub

A mobile-friendly format optimized for smartphones, tablets, and eReaders.

### 🧩 Immersive Reader

Customize the reading experience with features such as:

- Text-to-speech
- Adjustable font sizes
- Increased spacing
- Reading focus tools
- Colour and contrast options

## How to Access Blackboard Ally Formats

1. Open your course in Blackboard.
2. Locate a document or file with the **Ally Alternative Formats** icon.
3. Select the icon.
4. Choose the format that best meets your needs.
5. Download and use the file.
