**Accessible Learning Services: Computerized Note-Taking Accommodation**

Seneca Polytechnic offers Accessible Learning Services \(ALS\) to students who require academic accommodations due to medical or disability-related needs. One such accommodation is computerized notetaking, which provides students with real-time assistance in capturing lecture notes, helping them engage more effectively in the classroom.

In partnership with [Ai.Media](https://www.ai-media.tv/), a leading provider of live captioning and transcription services, Accommodated Seneca students are offered professional note-taking services. This is specifically designed for students who have medical or disability documentation that supports the need for this accommodation.

**What is Computerized Notetaking?**

Computerized notetaking is an academic accommodation that helps students receive real-time, accurate transcriptions of classroom lectures, discussions, and other academic content. This accommodation allows students with disabilities to focus on understanding course material without worrying about missing key points, especially in fast-paced or dense learning environments linked to disability related symptoms.

Ai.Media provides live captioning services that convert spoken words into written text instantly, which are then displayed on a screen. This ensures that students have access to accurate, real-time notes of the class content.

**How It Works**

1. **Ai.Media Services**: Seneca Polytechnic works with Ai.Media, a specialized service provider in live captioning and transcription. Ai.Media uses advanced AI-powered tools to transcribe lectures as they happen, ensuring real-time accuracy and accessibility.
2. **Documentation Requirements**: To qualify for computerized note-taking services, students must provide medical or disability documentation that clearly outlines the need for this accommodation. Documentation must be submitted to the Accessible Learning Services office for review and approval. Learn more about how academic accommodations are determined [here](https://students.senecapolytechnic.ca/spaces/122/accessible-learning-services/wiki/view/11056/als-document-requirements).
3. **Real-Time Note-Taking**: Once approved, students will be assigned a system that delivers real-time notes through the Ai.Media platform. These notes can be accessed during or after class, depending on the service setup.
4. **Access to Notes**: Students can review the transcribed notes either on their own devices or through a platform provided by Ai.Media. The service may be integrated into the course delivery system or accessed through a separate portal.

**Eligibility and Application Process**

To access computerized note-taking services, students must:

1. **Register with ALS**: Students need to register with the Accessible Learning Services office to request accommodations. This requires a student to register with ALS through the Student Portal and attend a first appointment with an Accessibility Counsellor.
2. **Submit Documentation**: Documentation must outline the nature of the disability and the student and the Accessibility Counsellor will collaborate to determine if this academic accommodation is applicable.
3. **Accommodations**: The Accessibility Counsellor will create the academic accommodation letter and the student distributes it to the appropriate faculty. The ALS Service Advisors will work with the student, and the faculty to arrange access to Ai.Media.

**Benefits of Computerized Note-Taking**

- **Real-Time Access**: Students receive immediate access to class notes as lectures happen, helping to reduce the risk of missing key information.
- **Improved Focus**: Students can focus on understanding and participating in the lecture, rather than trying to take notes themselves.
- **Enhanced Learning**: Having a written record of lectures and discussions allows students to review material at their own pace, improving comprehension and retention.
- **Customizable Formats**: The notes are typically provided in text format, which can be customized for readability or converted into other formats \(i.e., audio, PDF\) depending on the student’s needs.

**How to Get Started with Ai.Media Services**

- **Step 1**: Contact Accessible Learning Services to discuss your accommodation needs.
- **Step 2**: Provide the necessary medical or disability documentation.
- **Step 3**: Once approved, ALS will guide you on how to access the Ai.Media platform for note-taking services.
- **Step 4**: Enjoy real-time transcription during your classes and access the notes after.
