Seneca employees publish research on transferable skills and career success | Seneca Works | Seneca Students

Two members of the Seneca Works team have co-authored a research article exploring how extracurricular activities help students build skills that support long-term career success.

From Field to Future: Translating Extracurricular Activities into Transferable Skills for Career Success, written by Hana El Kaissi and Luca Sirianni, was recently published in the Canadian Journal of Career Development. The publication marks Seneca’s first article published in the journal.

The article examines how skills developed through extracurricular activities can translate into workplace success. Drawing on survey results from members of the Seneca Sting women’s soccer team, the 2023 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association national champions, the research highlights students’ awareness of skills gained through sports, including communication, collaboration, critical thinking and adaptability.

The authors also found that extracurricular experiences can play an important role in helping students develop and communicate transferable skills valued by employers. Their research also underscores the role career development practitioners can play in supporting students as they prepare for future careers.
