NAT248 The Sustainable Forest – Haliburton

Do you want to engage more with nature and learn how forests can become sustainable? Are you interested in an authentic, hands-on, outdoor Canadian experience in the heart of Ontario cottage country?

Register for this General Education course and satisfy your interest in sustainability and local travel while fulfilling one of your program’s general education requirements.

Spend two-nights and three-days at Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve in Fall 2024 and explore how this forest operation is engaging in sustainable practices to meet environmental, social and economic needs.

Host Venue: Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve

Location: Haliburton, Ontario

Offering: One General Education course credit towards your program (Science and Social Sciences stream)

Term: Fall 2024 (travel portion of course in study week)

Accommodations: Small cabins on property

Application Deadline and Course Fees Due: Course enrollment is on a continuous basis until filled. Students are confirmed in the course when their travel fees have been received.

Mandatory Orientation Required: In-person session at Newnham Campus:

Wednesday, September 4, 2024, 4:15 – 6:55 pm (Cohort One)

Thursday, September 5, 2024: 4:15 – 6:55 pm (Cohort Two)

Online, asynchronous classes: Weeks 2-6 (September 9 – October 11)

Travel to Haliburton:

Monday, October 21 – Wednesday, October 23, 2024 (Cohort One)

Wednesday, October 23 – Friday, October 25, 2024 (Cohort Two)

Course Concludes: Friday, October 25, 2024

 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • students must have completed one semester at Seneca.
  • students must attend an  in-person orientation session at Newnham Campus in Week 1 of classes.
  • students must be available to travel during study week.
  • students must be enrolled in a full-time program with a Science and Social Sciences General Education requirement.

Fees and Funding:

  • Regular tuition is payable to Seneca.
  • Participating students will be responsible for course travel/ accommodation fees equaling $462.50 (associated travel costs were offset by the generous support of Seneca Alumni/ Student Experience Fund).
  • Fees must be paid by the fee deadline in order to be enrolled in the course.

Submit the application form and pay the associated fee. 

Course Credit Information:

  • Upon successful completion of this SEAT course, you will receive a General Education credit towards your diploma program requirements under the stream of Science and Social Sciences.
  • Please note, that while the course concludes in Haliburton during Study week, and no other work is required of students beyond this date, the grade for the course will be released with all other grades for the fall semester in Student Home after the exam period.

 

Additional Notes:

  • The NAT248 course outline and learning outcomes can be found here.
  • Travelling students must adhere to all guidelines and requirements of overnight visitors to Haliburton Forest and Wild Life Reserve.
  • Students must adhere to faculty guidelines and direction concerning outdoor activities including animal encounters, trail travel, health and safety, and shared cabin etiquette. 
  • Fees include roundtrip transportation to Haliburton Forest from Newnham Campus, accommodations on-site in the form of shared cabins for two nights (double occupancy rooms), food at the Cookhouse (3 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 3 dinners) and paid admittance to tours and Wolf Centre. 
  • No consumption of alcohol, cannabis or other recreational drugs is allowed while on the property. Smoking is permitted in a designated area on site.
  • Accommodations will be made for students in regard to dietary restrictions and gender preferences for cabin mates.
  • Students who accept to participate in this travel must also accept as a condition of participation the possibility that the travel may be canceled due to unforeseen circumstances. If cancelation occurs, we will refund any payments made by participants, and will withdraw any disbursed grants or funds.
