Smart city technology attracts hundreds of millions in investment each year but has also been the subject of criticism, particularly around applications like facial recognition and other forms of public space surveillance. Yet smart city tech has clear benefits in some areas, especially climate and clean energy applications, provided these technologies are adopted with adequate guardrails. The lecture will look at established and emerging cases and cautions.
