Seneca Polytechnic has a new way to support food security and healthy, sustainable food on campus. Thanks to the utilization of hydroponic vertical growing technology, through The Seneca Farm, vegetables are now growing in two repurposed shipping containers at Newnham Campus. Urban agriculture and sustainable food systems is a growing field as climate change and related impacts cause issues to our global food systems, particularly in externally dependent cities. The Seneca Farm addresses various goals in our Sustainability Plan and is in alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Goal 2: Zero Hunger and Goal 15: Life on Land.
The Seneca Farm is split up into two levels — the ground floor focuses on commercial growing for dining services at Newnham Campus and the upper floor centers around research. This allows the farm to act as a new hub for urban agriculture applied research and allows for the continued commercial growth of vegetables and herbs.
The Seneca Farm runs on an innovative hydroponic system developed by Just Vertical, an indoor, vertical farming company that builds, sells and supports highly scalable, hydroponic indoor gardening and farming modules. This system uses nutrient-rich peat moss and water to grow plants indoors year-round.
The Seneca Farm will be used as a living laboratory, with employees and researchers focusing on identifying the key factors that influence plant development in conditions where space and sunlight are limited.
