Are students insured at field placement?
Ontario students in unpaid work placements, as part of their program at Seneca Polytechnic, are covered by the Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB).
For employers who are not required to have WSIB coverage, MCU has private insurance from Chubb Insurers in place to cover students on unpaid work placements. Although cost of coverage for all students in an approved unpaid placement is provided by MCU and not the Placement Employer, MCU requires Seneca to confirm whether the Placement Employer has WSIB coverage.
If a student gets injured during their placement, both Seneca and the Placement Employer must use their MTCU-issued Firm Number to complete an online claim form. These forms must be completed within 48 hours of the incident.
