The child protection worker will assess the information shared and determine next steps, including whether an investigation is needed. If it is determined that a child may need protection, a process is set in motion. If the report received suggests that the child or youth is in immediate danger, a protection worker may respond in 12-24 hours of receiving the report. Otherwise, a protection worker will investigate further and complete a safety assessment within seven days of the report.

During or after the investigation process, the child protection agency may offer various support or involve other services where warranted. Support services are focused on using the least intrusive means possible, while building on existing strengths, to help ensure safety for the child and family.
