Safe Walk at Seneca Polytechnic: Get to Your Destination Safely | Security and Emergency Management Services | Seneca Students

At Seneca Polytechnic, your safety is a shared priority. Like many colleges and universities across North America, Seneca offers a Safe Walk service so you don’t have to walk alone if you don’t feel comfortable.

Whether you’re heading to a residence, the bus stop, your car, or another building on campus, Campus Security can help you get there safely, 24 hours a day.

What is Safe Walk?

Seneca Safe Walk is a free, 24/7 service available through the SenecaSAFE app and Campus Security. It provides you with a walking partner — a trained Security Officer — when you’d prefer not to walk alone.

You can use Safe Walk:

• To and from parking lots
• To residence buildings
• Between campus buildings
• To nearby bus stops or transit stops on campus property

Safe Walk is available to all students, employees and visitors at King, Markham, Newnham, Seneca@York and Peterborough campuses.

How to Request a Safe Walk

You can request a Safe Walk in a few easy ways:

1. Through the SenecaSAFE app (Campus Safe Walk)
   • Open the SenecaSAFE app on your phone.
   • Tap the Campus Safe Walk option.
   • Follow the prompts to request a Security Officer escort.
   • Go to the agreed meeting point and your escort will walk with you to your destination on campus.
2. Call Campus Security
   • You can also call Campus Security directly:
     • Campus Security (all major campuses): 416-764-0911
   • Let the Security Officer know:
     • Your name
     • Your current location
     • Your destination
     • If you have any mobility or accessibility needs
3. Visit a Security Office
   • You can request a Safe Walk in person at any Security office:
     • Newnham: B2000
     • King: GH2092 (Lobby)
     • Seneca@York: S1144
     • Markham: Room 104 (Main Entrance)
     • Peterborough: YPQ 126
4. Use an Emergency Help Phone
   • At many locations on campus and in some parking lots, you’ll find Emergency Help Phones that connect you directly to Campus Security. You can use these to request a Safe Walk if you don’t have a phone with you.

Other Ways to Walk Safely Using the SenecaSAFE App

In addition to Safe Walk, the SenecaSAFE app gives you other options to help you feel safer while walking:

Friend Walk

If you’d rather have a friend or family member “walk with you” virtually, you can use Friend Walk:

• Send a Friend Walk request to someone you trust
• They can watch your trip on a map using your phone’s GPS
• They see your progress in real time and know when you’ve arrived

This is a great option if you’re commuting or walking off campus.

Safety Toolbox & Flashlight

The Safety Toolbox in SenecaSAFE includes helpful tools (like a flashlight feature) that can make walking at night a bit easier and safer.

Tips for Safer Walking on Campus

Along with using Safe Walk and the SenecaSAFE app, you can help keep yourself and others safe by:

• Walking on well-lit paths and main routes
• While the campus is a safe space, avoiding isolated shortcuts (through fields, unassumed roads, etc.), especially at night is always a better option
• Keeping your phone charged and accessible
• Walking with a friend or classmate when possible
• Being aware of your surroundings (limit distractions from headphones or screens)

If you see something that doesn’t feel right, you can Report a Tip through the SenecaSAFE app, call Security, or visit a Security office.

When to Call 911

• If you or someone else is in immediate danger
• If you witness a serious crime or medical emergency

After calling 911, contact Campus Security so officers can respond on campus and guide emergency services to the right location.
