If you applied to extend your study permit before it expired, you are under  maintained status (formerly called "implied status"). This means,

    • you can remain and stay in Canada, and
    • you can continue to study under the same conditions of your original study permit until a decision is made

However, if you did not apply to extend your study permit before it expired and applied for restoration, you don't have any legal status. You may remain in Canada while your restoration is being processed but you cannot study or work, until your restoration is approved and you obtain a new study permit.
