A temporary resident visa (TRV) is an official document issued by a visa office. It is placed in a person’s passport to show that they have met the requirements for admission to Canada as a temporary resident. Holding a TRV alone does not authorize an individual to study or work in Canada.
Only citizens of certain countries require a TRV to enter Canada. If you are from a country where citizens are required to have a TRV to enter Canada, you will have obtained a TRV before leaving for Canada.
A TRV is sometimes referred to as a Visitor Visa or Entry Visa.
Although it is not mandatory to have a valid TRV while you are studying in Canada, it is advisable to keep your TRV valid in case you are required to leave Canada unexpectedly.
If you are already in Canada with a valid study permit, you may apply for a new TRV in Canada.
For steps and instructions, view the Temporary Resident visa application (in Canada) guide.
You should apply at least 3 months before your planned departure from Canada.
If your Study Permit is expiring soon, please renew your Study Permit first, and then apply for a TRV.
If your TRV expires, you will not be allowed to re-enter Canada even if you have a valid Study Permit.
