Co-op Work Permits | I am an international student | Seneca Students

As of April 1, 2026, full-time post-secondary students are no longer required to hold a co-op work permit to participate in student work placements (e.g. WIL, co-op, internships) that are an essential part of an academic program offered by a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada. 
 
Students may now use the on-campus work authorization printed on their study permit (“May accept employment on campus”​) to participate in student work placements essential to their program, including in locations outside of campus boundaries, provided they meet all the eligibility requirements and that the student work placement totals 50% or less of their study program. 

 Students who will complete WIL placements in vulnerable sectors will require an immigration medical exam. Complete this exam before submitting your study permit application to ensure you receive the correct authorizations.

Should your study permit includes the condition restricting you from working in vulnerable sectors (childcare, primary/secondary school teaching or health service field)​, you must amend or have the restrictions removed before you can begin your work placement.

If you already applied for a co-op work permit prior to April 1, this permit is no  longer necessary, and you will receive a communication from IRCC.​ No action is required from you. 

 
Other Conditions / Notes: 

• Must remain full time status throughout the term, with exception of the very last term  

• No weekly hour limit but must ensure work placements cannot exceed 50% of the study program. 

• Students can still work off campus up to 24 hours a week on the off-campus work condition of their study permit.
