Justice Murray Sinclair, trailblazing and dedicated advocate for Indigenous rights and the former chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, has passed away at the age of 73.

Justice Sinclair was Manitoba’s first Indigenous judge and he used that post to reveal the truth about Canada’s dark history of residential schools while championing reconciliation.

His work on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission gave voice to the thousands of residential school survivors and led to the creation of 94 Calls to Action.

Seneca was fortunate to welcome Sinclair’s son, Dr. Niigaan Sinclair, in 2016 at our Teaching and Learning Day. Also a passionate advocate for Indigenous rights, Dr. Sinclair outlined the work we needed to do to make meaningful steps to truth and reconciliation. Today, his insights guide our Curriculum Integration work.

Flags are flying at half-mast across the country, and a sacred fire has been lit outside the Manitoba Legislature in his honour. Please join us in remembering a remarkable leader and true change maker.
