Founded in May 2023, lately, Seneca Polytechnic’s Bee Club has been abuzz with activity.
Led by Gino Franceschetti, Manager, IT Service Desk and Don Forster, Director, Office of Sustainability, the Bee Club is made up of a group of students and employees who care for 10 bee hives found at Newnham Campus.
Under the guidance of Mr. Forster and Mr. Franceschetti, members learn to care for the hives from the beginning to end of season, which is from May to October. This year, several Seneca employees took part in the club, including Christine Hagan, Professor; Kevin Richardson, Student Recruitment Officer; Judy Pattison, Student Recruitment & Liaison Officer; Jennifer Stemerdink, Program Assistant; Catherine Brassard, Talent Acquisition Specialist; Building Operator Eugen Kertesz; Charmaine Williams, ITS Client Support Liaison and Sarah Saqib, Student Recruitment Officer.
In total, there are 60 bee hives spread across three of Seneca’s campuses, home to a population of four million buzzing bees!
Recently, the Bee Club harvested honey from the beehives at Peterborough Campus, which produces roughly 100 pounds (around 72 jars) of raw honey. From Tuesday, Nov. 21 to Thursday, Nov. 30, the Bee Club is running a honey sale. Information about upcoming honey sales is available online.
All invited to purchase a jar of honey. There are several sizes available, ranging in price from $3 to $18.
Those who wish to purchase honey outside of the honey sale event can contact Don Forster anytime.
