Black History Month celebrations continued yesterday during the unveiling of Ekow Nimako’s sculpture at Seneca@York Campus. The Ghanaian-Canadian artist sculpture is crafted entirely from black LEGO® and draws inspiration from Afro-futurism and West African mask-making traditions.

The piece forges a connection between the familiar science fiction spacecrafts genre and diverse African cultures from which much of its fantasies originate.

Mr. Nimako, who now has a partnership with LEGO®, uses conventional LEGO® components to intricately blend Afro-futurism and Afro-fantasy in his artwork. He infuses angular, curved features to bring life into the sculptures while vividly drawing from the continent's rich cultural heritage.

The sculpture is now on display at the library at Seneca@York Campus.
