The Fairmont Royal York in Toronto was abuzz with excitement in mid-October as the Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards (CAFA) honoured the industry’s finest. Among the night’s top moments was the announcement of Tia Kureshi, a talented graduate from our Fashion Arts advanced diploma program, as the recipient of The Fashion Design Student of the Year Award.

During her final year at Seneca, Ms. Kureshi’s passion and talent have shined through. Her third-year thesis collection Threads of Thoughts was a personal exploration that showcased her storytelling ability through fashion. From the outset, Ms. Kureshi has impressed with a design process marked by sophistication, direction, and a signature style that is unmistakably her own.

Ms. Kureshi’s big CAFA win was the latest in a long line of accolades. She recently received both the prestigious Vivienne Poy Knitwear Award for outstanding knitwear and the Seneca School of Fashion Avant-Garde Fashion Award. These honours highlighted her innovative approach and dedication to her craft.

In addition to these achievements, Ms. Kureshi also demonstrated her prowess in the Ontario Skills Competition, where she won gold in the Fashion Category. She further solidified her reputation at the Redefining Design event, where she was awarded the Avant-Garde Award. This accolade, awarded by a 31-member industry panel, recognized her cutting-edge designs and creative vision.

Ms. Kureshi’s journey will continue this fall. She has been invited by Fashion Art Toronto (FAT) to showcase her collection at The Fashion Playground from Nov. 14-17. This event will feature a diverse array of photography, paintings, installations, and illustrations from local artists, providing Ms. Kureshi with a platform to share her work with a broader audience.

Ms. Kureshi’s achievements are a testament to her hard work, creativity, and dedication. As she embarks on her next chapter, we eagerly anticipate the innovative designs and narratives she will continue to bring to life.
