Construction work above the loading dock connected to Building D at Newnham Campus is set to begin on Monday, May 4 and be completed by Friday, Aug. 28.

Timeline of the project

The project will be completed in three general stages:

  • Stage One: May 4 to late-May
  • Stage Two: May 26 to late-July
  • Stage Three: August

The construction crew will start setting up on Monday, May 4 and work between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays (excluding statutory holidays) for the duration of the project, with Saturday operations at their discretion.

Temporary signage and fencing will be placed around the construction work and staging areas (please refer to map below) for awareness and safety.

What to expect inside the building

Regular student activities within Building D will continue until further notice. Any potentially disruptive construction will not take place during May Startup and the Newnham Career Fair on Tuesday, June 2.

However, due to the nature of the project, there will be:

  • Increased amount of dust and noise around the working area during regular business hours. This will be especially noticeable in Stage Two, when jackhammers, saw cutters and other tools will be used to demolish and remove the concrete slab
  • Physical vibrations in the nearest spaces like The Service Hub and Career Threads

To prevent dust from getting inside the building, you will notice that doors and windows nearest to the construction area will be closed for the duration of the project.

What to expect outside the building

Exterior access to and around Building D will be impacted in the following ways:

  • Two sets of doors in the northern external entrances/exits of Building D will remain open May 4-15; one set of doors will remain open afterwards
  • The exterior stairwell connecting Level 2 of Building D to ground level will be closed for the duration of the project
  • Temporary walkways around the work area will be available
  • Our beloved hot dog stand will relocate temporarily to minimize the impact of dust

Your patience is appreciated

This construction work is required to ensure the loading docks and Building D can continue to support our campus activities and operations for many years to come. We appreciate your understanding and patience.
