Seneca’s Office of Sustainability would like to share a few tips to make the holiday season more sustainable.
A gift to remember
Consider gifting an experience this year. Better yet, give an experience you can share with the receiver. Experiences are a great way to show someone that you care about them - and it doesn’t have to be expensive. The gift of quality time, trying something new and making new memories is the most valuable gift we can give. The added bonus is that it does not involve the impact of purchasing material goods — and wrapping them!
Deck the halls with LEDs
Decorating with LED lights and adding timers are a festive way to decorate your home in an energy efficient way. Remember that nature likes to sleep too — so turn off your lights when you go to bed.
DIY holiday trimmings
Get creative with your old decorations or use materials in your home or recycling bin. Repurposing items is a creative way to add meaning to your holidays.
Creative wrapping
There are many creative ways to present your gifts with resources that already exist — newspaper, magazine pages, string, shopping bags, etc. Don’t forget to use materials that are recyclable — and remember — the most sustainable item, is the one that already exists.
