"EBO'ZHE" (Ekow Nimako, 2023) | MyNews | Seneca Students

This sculpture by Toronto-based artist Ekow Nimako is part of a series of artworks entitled Building Black Amorphia: Spiritual Starships. The series is inspired by West African mask-making practices, Afrofuturism, interstellar vessels, and various hybridized forms. Each mask draws inspiration from familiar or unfamiliar science fiction spacecrafts, establishing links between the sci-fi genre and the various world cultures from which much of its lore is appropriated. EBO’ZHE deftly harnesses the vehicular and aerodynamic form of the isosceles triangle, while simultaneously upholding a traditional mask aesthetic which features an elongated face with an austere expression.
