Jack Shadbolt’s tapestry evokes the dynamics of renewal. His biomorphic forms, like those found in Surrealist art, are meant to resonate within our deepest primordial memories. They exemplify two poles of expression. In the tapestry, emerging structures struggle to dominate and control the flow of rebirth only to have new competitive forms erupting spontaneously a moment later. The upshot is a tension between the strictures of Shadbolt’s design and the organic flux of his forms. (David Phillips, Seneca Polytechnic)
