If you are in immediate danger or need help, call 911.
You can formally report to the police at any time as there is no statue of limitations for reporting sexual assault in Canada. If you report to the police, you are not required to press charges for a criminal case and they can connect you with other resources and supports.
Sexual assault investigations can take anywhere from a few months to a few years. Reporting to the police does not mean that they will lay a charge, as they may not have enough evidence to proceed. If possible, it’s helpful to report to the police division in which the crime took place. However, if you’re unsure, go to the police division nearest you.
For more information on the reporting, investigation and criminal process, Toronto Police Services has released a guide to help survivors.
