Infant & Early Child Mental Health (IMH) | Student Program Information

IMH Field Requirements

As an IMH student you will complete an unpaid field placement in semester two. Field placements provide students with the opportunity to integrate classroom teachings into practice while working in the community with infant mental health practitioners. Students will assist children and families and learn about mental health supports in various community settings, such as health promotion, early intervention, children's mental health and family resource programs. Students are appointed field placements depending on previous experience and long-term goals. 

Field Requirements

Complete a minimum of 22 days at placement.  A full day can include prep work, cleaning, meetings, programming, and any other tasks that your Field Mentor completes in their full day at work. 

IMH field placements are designed to be independent learning opportunities.  As such, students are responsible for initiating and maintaining communication with Seneca Faculty, Field Liaisons and Field Mentors. 

Students need to:

• email a thorough introduction, including resume and a copy of the IMH Field Placement Manual, to the Field Mentor once placement has been assigned by the Seneca Field Liaison
• share field documents (Time Sheet, Learning Goals, and Assessment Documents) with the Field Mentor on the first day of placement and as required on subsequent days
• develop and communicate Learning Goals in a timely manner
• set appropriate times with the Field Mentor to carry out programming and receive feedback
• attend placement seminars with the Field Liaison
• immediately inform the Coordinator or Field Liaison about any concerns pertaining to the field placement and difficulties meeting placement requirements.
• contact both the Field Liaison and the Field Mentor if you are not able to attend placement
• submit all field documents in a timely manner upon completion of field placement present learning at the Infant Mental Health in Motion Forum
