Students who have prior or current work experience related to their program of study may be eligible to use that experience toward meeting their Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) requirements through the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) process.
Students may apply for WIL PLAR for:
Both WTP200 and their co-op/work term course(s), or
The co-op/work term course(s) only if they have already completed WTP200 or are currently enrolled in WTP200 (after Day 10)
For WIL PLAR, please note:
Your experience must be program-related and completed within the past 5 years
The PLAR experience must be completed with one employer over at least 10 consecutive weeks (typically 10–16 weeks), with a minimum of 420 total hours. It cannot be split across multiple positions or employers. Part-time hours (less than 30 hours per week) may be accepted in some cases, depending on the program
You must provide a direct supervisor’s contact information for verification
If you are self-employed, please contact the PLAR Office for revision of WIL PLAR eligibility and consideration
If you apply for PLAR while enrolled in WTP200, you must inform your WIL Coordinator right away. While your application is being reviewed (which may take up to 8 weeks), you cannot participate in the work term job search
1. Review the course outline(s) for the course(s) you are requesting prior learning credit towards.
2. Complete and submit the PLAR Application Form to the TC and PLAR Office at theservicehub@senecapolytechnic.ca. Your application will be reviewed to determine if you meet the PLAR preliminary eligibility requirements.
3. If you meet the preliminary eligibility requirements, the TC and PLAR Office will provide you with a WIL Pre-Screening and Employer Verification form. Please complete the two required forms and provide a copy of your resume.
4. Your Pre-Screening and Employer Verification forms will be sent review, and your prior experiences will be verified to confirm the legitimacy of your experience with your current or previous employer.
5. Once your Pre-Screening and Employer Verification forms have been reviewed and your prior experience verified, a decision will be provided to you regarding your assessment eligibility.
6. If approved, you will then be provided with a PLAR Portfolio Assessment package. Please send your completed assessment portfolio package to the TC and PLAR Office.
7. Your completed assessment package will be sent for evaluation by a Subject Matter Expert (SME).
8. Once your assessment package has been evaluated, the TC and PLAR Office will contact you via email with your results. If successful, a grade will be added to your transcript for the course.
