SQAC talks to students about the Course Assessment Survey

During the Fall 2024 semester, SQAC members visited the different campuses to promote the Course Assessment Survey (CAS) and highlight its importance. Our primary goal was to break down misconceptions about the survey, encourage participation, and demonstrate how it empowers students to impact academic quality.

Key Insights:

  • Many students were unaware of how impactful their feedback could be when surveys are completed collectively with 5+ responses from a course.
  • Some expressed concerns about privacy and whether the survey responses were truly anonymous.
  • There was skepticism about the effectiveness of the CAS and whether faculty were actively using the results to make improvements.

Through our conversations with students, we gained valuable insights into student concerns around the survey and worked to address them by raising awareness and fostering trust in the process.

The CAS is administered every Fall and Winter semester during weeks 10-12. The survey is distributed to each student's MySeneca email from the Seneca Centre for Institutional Data and Enterprise Analytics (C-IDEA), along with follow-up reminders. If a student is enrolled in both continuing education and daytime courses, they will receive two links. The survey is voluntary and students are not identified in any reporting of the results.

The information collected is very important – this is our opportunity to help Seneca improve our classroom experience and let their professors know what is and isn’t working.

There are questions on the survey about Seneca’s academic delivery options – in-person, online, hybrid, and flexible. The information collected helps program areas know how to schedule future courses.

Faculty and their supervisor will receive survey results where there were five or more respondents. Faculty teaching daytime courses receive the results a few weeks into the following semester, while faculty teaching in continuing education courses receive the results after grades have been released at the end of the semester.

Watch for the Winter 2025 Course Assessment Survey in your MySeneca inbox at the end of March.
