Integrating AI across all programs at Seneca: Insights from a Curriculum Integration Focus Group

On October 7, 2025, the Student Quality Assurance Council (SQAC) participated in a focus group with faculty champions working to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into their programs.

The focus group was run by the Teaching & Learning Centre, and is part of an institution-wide initiative called Curriculum Integration (CI).  In order to explore AI in a meaningful and authentic way, students from the SQAC were invited to share their thoughts and ideas in a special session.

During the meeting, students and faculty shared how they are currently using AI. The group discussed the importance of adopting AI in a changing world, navigating it responsibility and how faculty can prepare students to use AI in the workplace.

Current Use of AI by Students

Students shared practical ways they are already leveraging AI to enhance their learning, including:

  • Summarizing content for easier comprehension,
  • Creating videos and tables to visualize complex material, and
  • Breaking down rubrics and assignment outlines for clarity.

Faculty Perspectives and Challenges

Faculty expressed enthusiasm for integrating AI into teaching and learning, but noted potential challenges, such as copyright concerns when students upload licensed content and course materials to third-party AI platforms, and the potential for students to over-rely on AI for output without verifying the material or using critical thinking skills.

The session emphasized that all Seneca students and employees have access to Microsoft Copilot and that Seneca recommends Microsoft CoPilot as a safer generative AI platform.

Student Expectations

The SQAC participants indicated that they are eager for faculty to incorporate AI into classroom activities and provide structured opportunities to use AI as a learning tool. Suggestions included:

  • Training and conversation on responsible AI use.
  • Guidance on creating effective prompts.
  • Insights into where AI adds the most value within their field of study.

Next Steps

Both students and faculty emphasized the growing importance of AI and the need for students to develop AI literacy skills that prepare them for the workplace. Participants agreed that understanding AI is no longer an optional tool, but rather an essential workplace skill that will help graduates to lead in the future.
