Students are placed on academic probation at the end of a term whenever they fail three or more courses or whenever they achieve a GPA lower than 2.0 (this threshold may be higher for some programs). Students can continue in their program while on academic probation, although they may be academically withdrawn after two terms in a row of achieving results that would place them on probation.
We understand that being placed on academic probation can cause negative feelings, but the process is not meant to be punitive. The probationary process is instead meant to signal to students that they may not be achieving the grades necessary to graduate from their programs, and to encourage them to reach out for support. Any student who has been placed on probation is encouraged to connect with their student adviser to discuss success strategies and the various supports the college has to offer.
