Days of Significance

Days and months of significance are ways to acknowledge and learn about historical, cultural and equitable practices that contribute to a more inclusive and just society. They include historical commemorations, cultural celebrations, identity awareness and religious holidays that carry profound meaning for individuals and communities.

Seneca is made up of many diverse communities that commemorate and celebrate their milestones, holidays and awareness differently. Seneca uses the following principles to determine recognized dates and the level of acknowledgement:

1.	Seneca is a secular institution within a global community.

2.	Our pillars include reconciliation, diversity, inclusion and sustainability.

3.	Seneca focuses on equity-deserving and most represented in our demographics.

Days and Months of Significance

Identity and heritage-related months are supported through events, programming or resources that centre lived experience, amplify voices and encourage ongoing engagement. Religious observances of our most common religious groups are shared through social media to support timely awareness. Where learning resources are available, such as curated library materials, they are highlighted through internal communications. Although some observances may not be formally highlighted each year, they are valued.

Flags on Campus

The Flag Protocol Policy, approved by the Senior Executive Committee, determines the days that Seneca observes with flags at half-mast at the main entrance of King, Newnham, Peterborough and Seneca@York campuses. It also determines when specialized flags are hung on secondary flagpoles at Newnham and Seneca@York.

Religious Observance

Seneca recognizes that members of our community may wish to observe religious holidays or participate in ceremonies meaningful to their faith. We provide religious accommodation for students and employees in accordance with our religious observance policy.
