Accelerate Action: Celebrating International Women’s Day at Seneca

Accelerate Action: Celebrating International Women’s Day at Seneca

As an international student, a woman, a sister, and a daughter, I have witnessed the power of resilience and unity among women. But I have also seen the challenges that persist—barriers that slow down progress toward gender equality. This year, International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 calls on us to Accelerate Action—to take bold steps toward closing the gender gap, not in five generations, but within our lifetime.

At the current rate, gender parity will not be achieved until 2158. That’s five generations too long. We can’t afford to wait. This IWD, let’s take action—faster, together, and with purpose.

What Does Accelerating Action Mean?

Accelerating Action means taking deliberate and meaningful steps to break down barriers, challenge bias, and support the advancement of women and girls in every sphere of life. Whether it’s in education, the workplace, leadership, healthcare, or economic empowerment, change happens when we act rather than wait.

How Can We Accelerate Action at Seneca?

Here are three simple but powerful ways we can take action right here in our own community:

  1. Support the Supporters – There are countless organizations and initiatives working tirelessly to uplift women and girls. Whether through fundraising, volunteering, or simply amplifying their voices, we can stand in solidarity with those making a difference. At Seneca, getting involved in student-led initiatives, attending IWD events, or supporting women-focused projects is a great way to start.

  1. Challenge Bias and Stereotypes – Gender equality is not just about policies; it’s about shifting mindsets. In our daily interactions, we can call out stereotypes, question biases, and support women’s achievements. Whether in the classroom, workplace, or social settings, fostering inclusive conversations makes a real impact.

  1. Take Care of Each Other – Empowering women includes ensuring they have safe spaces, access to resources, and support systems. At Seneca, we have A.C.T. (Active Communication Together), a peer-to-peer support initiative that offers one-on-one wellness coaching and meaningful conversations with Peer Wellness Ambassadors. If you need someone to talk to, they are here to actively listen and support you.

Whether by attending IWD events at Seneca, engaging in discussions, or simply uplifting the voices of the women around us, we all have a role to play.
